We Understand the Importance of an Oil Change

An oil change is by far one of the most important maintenance services you can perform on your vehicle. This is because your oil works to protect your engine, which is one of the most expensive components of your vehicle.

As your engine runs, your oil is constantly pumped through your motor to cool, lubricate, and remove deposits from the many moving parts inside.

Your motor oil is good at its job, but its abilities are finite, and you will eventually need to change it. Failing to change your oil on a timely basis can result in reduced engine performance, accelerated engine wear, and sometimes even irreversible engine damage.

Regularly changing your oil is one of the simplest ways to promote engine longevity and reliability.

Not All Oil is the Same

At Bruce’s Tire & Auto Service, we use three high-quality Valvoline® oils that meet or exceed manufacturer requirements. Our use of top-shelf oils ensures your engine always has the best protection. Here is more information on the types of oils that we use:

Conventional Oil

Conventional oil is derived from crude oil and offers adequate protection for many naturally aspirated, and non-performance engines. This type of oil needs to be changed roughly every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Oil change services that use conventional oil tend to be the lowest cost services, but this type of oil is not compatible with every type of engine. Conventional oil loses its protective abilities at about 275ºF; however, some engines see much higher temperatures than this. For example, the inside of a turbocharger can reach temperatures of 450ºF, which makes this type of oil incompatible with some engines. However, conventional oil is a perfect choice for many engines of various makes and models.

Synthetic Blend Oil

Synthetic blend oil features a conventional oil base that has been blended with additional compounds to offer better protection for your engine. These synthetic additives are often detergents that remove carbon deposits on sealants and address some of the gasket leaks that high-mileage engines often encounter. Because this type of oil features synthetic additives, it offers added protection and extended service intervals. Choose synthetic blend oil, and you’ll enjoy 5,000 to 7,500-mile intervals between oil change services.

Full Synthetic Oil

Full synthetic oil is distilled and chemically modified from crude oil. This oil type is used in many high-performance engines and offers the best protection against breakdown and friction. Additionally, full synthetic oil can withstand temperatures of up to 500ºF, which makes it a standard for many high-performance and turbocharged engines. Full synthetic oil also doesn’t leave residue as it ages, which leaves your engine cleaner and plays a key role in engine longevity and reliability. Because of these factors, synthetic oil only needs to be changed roughly every 10,000 miles or once per year.

However, full synthetic oil isn’t the best choice for every engine. Synthetic oil is thinner than conventional oil, which makes it more likely to leak through any aging gaskets or seals.

Los Banos Oil Change FAQs:

What does a full-service oil change consist of?

When you visit our Los Banos auto repair shop for an oil change service, our certified mechanic will remove the drain plug. This is done in order to drain the old oil from your vehicle's oil pan. When we drain your oil, we will replace your oil filter with a new one. The new oil filter will be of good quality and suitable for your car's needs.

We will refill your oil reservoir with the appropriate oil type after the oil drains. The oil types available are synthetic blend, full synthetic, conventional oil, or high mileage oil. We will change your engine oil according to the manufacturer recommendations, although most vehicles need around five quarts.

A full-service Los Banos oil change also includes a tire rotation. This maintenance service involves removing your tires from the front or rear of your vehicle and swapping them with those on the opposite axle. Lastly, one of our mechanics will perform a multi-point inspection to update you on the health of your vehicle.

How long does a Los Banos oil change take?

Because we are experts at what we do, performing an oil change service on your vehicle generally takes less than an hour. However, we recommend booking an appointment to ensure your oil change is as expedited as possible. A quality Los Banos oil change can be hard to find, which is why our service bay can get quite busy — especially on the weekends. Please book an appointment to ensure we can quickly service your vehicle and get you back on the road.

Of course, we welcome drive-in customers; however, your service may take longer. If our service bay is busy, your oil change in Los Banos may take over two hours without an appointment. The good news is that scheduling service at Bruce's Tire & Auto is easy and can happen with just a few clicks.

How do you know if you need your oil changed?

There are a few ways to determine whether or not it's time for your vehicle's oil change:

  • Time. If your vehicle uses synthetic blend oil, you can expect to need an oil change after about six months or 5,000 miles. If your vehicle uses full synthetic oil, you should get an oil change after about 12 months or 10,000 miles.

  • Oil reminder light. Many modern vehicles are equipped with a maintenance reminder system to help you remember to change your motor oil. Some vehicles even use your actual driving parameters to determine the life of your oil. If your oil maintenance light was reset upon your last oil change, and your light comes on, it is a telltale sign that it is time for an oil change.

  • Decreased performance and fuel efficiency. As your oil ages, it loses its lubricating properties. This can prevent your engine from running smoothly and achieve less efficient fuel economy. If you notice your vehicle idling less smoothly than usual or you notice decreased fuel economy, it may be time for an oil change.
